Ignore the inevitable puns about its name -- this is as close as Citroën will come to making a retro 2CV.

As it turns 90 years old, Citroën suddenly seems keen to play up its heritage. We’ve witnessed the rebirth of the DS, a press kit full of images that photoshop new offerings into historic photography, and now the Revolte concept –- an eco-friendly compact that supposedly pays homage to the hallowed 2CV.

You’d think a concept that draws inspiration from France’s Volkswagen Beetle would be best launched at the Paris motor show. We’d agree, although in the later years of the 2CV’s 50-year lifespan, the deux cheveaux gained a cult following in Germany.

At first, it’s hard to find exactly how the wacky Revolte channels the elder Citroën, but you start to pick up on the hints as you approach the car. The retro cues are there, but unlike the Mini, it’s anything but blatant. Blatantly weird, however, it certainly is.

Although it wears a DS badge, Citroën has no plans on pushing the Revolte into production, but its powertrain -- a plug-in hybrid-electric system -- may eventually find its way into future small Citroën. The automaker is coy about the concept’s specifications, but we think it’d be fitting if the small range extender engine sported only two cylinders…
