In celebration of the organization's 50th anniversary, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety conducted an offset crash test between a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air and a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu.

Internet chat rooms, forums, and blogs are all abuzz about the IIHS killing what appears to be a quite nice 1959 Bel Air. I'm all for the preservation of automotive history (imagine my fury when those lovable lunatics at Mythbusters tried to destroy a Volkswagen Scirocco 16V by rolling an enormous ball of Legos down a hill at it!) but this video is shocking, it's educational, and most of all, it's awesome to watch.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard someone say to me "they don't make 'em like they used to." And thank the Lord Baby Jesus for that. Many old cars seem sturdy and tanklike, but in crashes, it's not the gauge of the exterior sheetmetal or the weight of a glovebox door that counts. And I can't think of a better demonstration of that than this video.

Sit back, fasten your seatbelts, and watch this video:
