Seen by many as Volkswagen's halo vehicle, the automaker says that noticeable changes are coming to the Beetle.
"The future New Beetle should look less toyish and become a much more mature product," said Walter de' Silva, VW's design director.
De' Silva says that the next Beetle will have a more functional interior. The current model has faced criticism due to the large space between its a-pillars and steering wheel and for a lack of roominess.
VW insiders say the next New Beetle hatchback will be launched in 2010, followed a year later by the cabriolet.
