The program, currently referred to as Project D, aims to replace the slow-selling Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger models. While those cars use a platform co-developed with Mitsubishi, Chrysler says it'll decide on a new partner within the next five months.
Who's the mystery date? Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli confirmed the potential partners are automakers, but declined to name names. He did, however, play up the potential for Project D to use alternative powertrain, perhaps the extended-range electric vehicle systems shown by the company earlier this month.
Though Chrysler is reportedly looking to improve the car from any possible perspective, it says Project D is a new type of vehicle development program, centered upon consumer feedback and research.
