Though Peugeot may be best known for automobiles, it's also a manufacturer of both bicycles and scooters. The latter helps explain the new HYmotion3 Compressor- concept, a two-person, three-wheel scooter complete with hybrid powertrain.
Looking much like the Piaggo MP3, the HYmotion3 is powered by two hub-mounted electric motors on the front two wheels, in addition to a 125cc engine that powers the rear wheel.
In normal operation, the HYmotion3 runs primarily on the electric motors alone, operating as a zero-emission vehicle. The gasoline engine fires up only when needed, typically in situations where either hard acceleration or battery recharging is needed.
Though it may seem odd to fit a hybrid system to something that's already as fuel-efficient as a scooter, the numbers are fairly impressive. Peugeot says the HYmotion3 can return fuel economy figures as high as 118 mpg, while emitting only 47 grams of CO2 per kilometer.
Will it reach production? As the HYMotion3's gas engine is already used in other Peugeot scooters, it's a possibility - but don't look for it in North America.
