Land Rover Cutting Back Production

Land Rover is slowing production at its plant in Solihull, England to prevent stockpiling of Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Discovery models.

Rather than layoff employees, new owner Tata will be shortening the work week to four days and designating Friday as a training day. This comes after 300 workers at the plant had agreed to move to the nearby Castle Bromwich factory, which builds the Jaguar XF.

The decision, not surprisingly, is due in part to the slowdowns in the U.S. and British economies. However, Land Rover has continued to do well in emerging markets like China, Russia, and the Middle East. Production of the venerable Land Rover Defender at the site will actually be bumped up slightly.
