We've been hearing plenty on how Ford plans to add new product to its portfolio - but we've not heard much about what, aside from trucks and SUVs, it plans on cutting.  If recent reports are accurate, both the Ford Taurus X and Mercury Sable may soon be vanquished from the company's lineup.

Although Ford isn't officially announcing the move, such a cut isn't a huge surprise.  The Sable (nee Montego) has been outsold by its Ford sibling, the Taurus, in triplicate.  Through July, 36,016 Tauruses left dealer showrooms, while Mercury managed to sell only 11,702.

The Taurus X, originally lauched in 2005 as the Freestyle, has lost relevance in consumers, thanks in part to the launch of the Flex - a similar style of crossover which rides on the same platform.

Killing the Sable also allows Ford more space to build the 2009 Lincoln MKS in its Chicago, Illinois, assembly plant, and perhaps even shift Mercury's focus to premium small cars.
