Thanks to some keen observation by Mike Levine, we now have a strong indication as to the displacement of the upcoming diesel engine for the 2010 Dodge Ram 1500. Under the hood of the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup is a sticker that dictates the proper amount of air conditioning refrigerant. The sticker lists, in addition to the available 6.7-liter I-6 turbo-diesel for the 2500 and 3500 models, a 5.0-liter turbo-diesel engine as a possibility. This suggests that the 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 will offer a 5.0-liter V-8 turbo-diesel engine.

This development would put the Dodge Ram 1500 diesel into direct competition with the upcoming 4.5-liter turbo-diesel V-8 from General Motors and the 4.4-liter turbo-diesel V-8 for Ford's F-Series trucks.

Early in the year, Chrysler announced that its diesel-powered Ram half-ton pickup would be released by 2010. The diesel is expected to improve fuel economy by 25 percent.

1. 4 LITERS! FOUR AND INLINE 6! If common sense was a weapon i'd carry it to Detroit in a heartbeat. What is so hard about a smaller diesel engine? people want to drive a big truck, thats not under scrutiny, it's the engine and trans that is the problem - people want it to get around 22 city and 26 highway. drop the smaller 4.0 liter, should get around 200HP/350FTLBS easy, which beats ALOT of trucks with gas engines RIGHT NOW, put the 6 speed trans in it, and start selling trucks again; this isn't hard just standardize on this type of setup - thats what costs money. 18 engine trans combos, 5 box configs, etc etc... standardize the lines down to crap that will sell, and recoup your money over the long run, make a small diesel, and a big one for the construction/5th wheel guys. Make an EXT cab and a 4 door. Once you limit the options you dont have to throw so much money at all these people and everything that muck up the process of selling vehicles.

2. I tried to find ANY 4 or 6-cylinder diesel mini pickup and while they're all over Europe and Asia, there are NONE here. So I have to settle for 18 mpg from my Dakota.

3. I've lived on a farm my whole life. We've had or drove basically all of the rams, diesel, gas, whatever. I have always liked a big diesel in a big truck and I wish dearly that dodge would drop every engine in it's lineup except for the Hemi and bring back the 5.9 liter diesel from before this dumb 6.7 liter cummins came out. Don't get me wrong, it is an awesome engine but we have two 1995 Dodge Ram 2500 buth with this engine in it and they have awesome power. They also get great mpg. I also thing that dodge should put the diesel from the Grand Cherokee into the Dakota. Well i better stop cause i could go on forever about what changes should be made.
