Remember a few short years ago, when only the snottiest of your friends had in-dash navigation systems? Now it’s available on cars like the 2009 Honda Fit. The next step in technology, real-time traffic navigation, is about to make the same leap.

Navteq, a provider of map data for navigation systems, said the number of models carrying its real time traffic technology is going to nearly double this year to seventy. That means the system and its costs have trickled down from elite vehicles like the 2009 Porsche 911 and Ferrari 612 to more utilitarian transport like the 2009 Chrysler Sebring and Toyota Matrix.

The main advantage of such systems, as one would expect, is that they calculate directions based on current traffic conditions, not just distance and estimated time. Only three years ago, the technology was available on two vehicles – the Cadillac CTS and the Acura RL. Next year, the technology will be available on 24 percent of the models sold in North America.
