Small cars do not immediately seem a good fit for a brand once known for selling large sedans called “Continentals,” but that is exactly what Ford is considering for Lincoln.

Ford thinks there is room for a small car in Lincoln’s portfolio as it prepares a barrage of compacts for the U.S. market. Lincoln is the latest in a line of premiere brands, including Cadillac and Infiniti, to look at the feasibility of a luxury small car. It already is set to receive a version of the next Ford Escape, which itself should be based on the Ford Kuga (pictured), the compact crossover sold in Europe.
