Like the Smart ForTwo, but still think its 33/41 mpg city/highway rating is too thirsty?  Your answer may come in 2010, when Smart is expected to launch an electric version of the two-seat city car.

Daimler AG chairman Dieter Zetsche confirmed the project during an interview with a German newspaper, but noted there was still a tremendous amount of uncertainty surrounding the car.  Zetsche says the automaker is unsure if it will lease or sell the car's batteries, nor does he know if Daimler will build the electric motors itself.

Such a project would be the first full-fledged attempt to build an electric ForTwo.  In 2005, 100 examples were built by British engineering firm Zytek, but the project never progressed past the test phase.
