Facing international criticism that the city's severe smog problem may impede athletes at the 2008 Summer Olympics, Beijing, China, is restricting traffic in an effort to curb emissions.

More than 3.3 million cars are registered in Beijing, but a new two-month plan hopes to cut that number in half.  Drivers will alternate between driving and banishment based on their license plate numbers.  On one day, even-numbered plates will be allowed, with odd-numbers allowed the next.  Those caught driving out of turn will be fined $14.

This plan, scheduled only for the next two months, is but one part of Beijing's plan to clean the air.  Nearly 300,000 heavy trucks have also been removed from the roads, while the city has built up and promoted its mass transit systems.
