Turbocharged Mercedes-Benz Lineup By 2010

Seeing a 'KOMPRESSOR' badge on a Mercedes-Benz may no longer mean it's supercharged.  If the automaker has its way, turbocharged engines will be offered across its entire lineup by 2010.

The announcement came at a press event in Germany, where Thomas Weber, head of Daimler AG's research and development, announced the move to turbochargers.

Unlike Mercedes-Benz's current supercharged engines, these turbocharged motors won't be built in the name of performance, but rather to meet upcoming emission standards.  Not only does the automaker have to worry about the new CAFE mandate in the U.S., but also new legislation in Europe that will require Daimler to cut its average fleet emissions by 33 percent by 2012.
