Taxi drivers in New York City have a new vehicular choice: the Nissan Altima Hybrid.

A small number of the hybrid sedans entered livery service earlier this week.  The Altima Hybridis rated at 35 mpg in the city, and will use approximately a third of the fuel consumed by traditional taxis (the ubiquitous Ford Crown Victoria only averages 12 to 15 mpg).  It's hoped the hybrids will save drivers $5000 in fuel expenses.

The Altima Hybrid, powered by a 158-hp, 2.5-liter I-4 gas engine and a 40-hp electric motor, qualifies as a partial zero-emissions vehicle.  Altima Hybrids are built in Tennessee, and have a base price of $25,795.
