Officials at GM Europe have confirmed that the 9-3 will continue to be built at Saab's home plant in Trollhattan, Sweden, birthplace of virtually all previous Saabs (save for the 9-2x and 9-7x).
Initial reports had production of the next 9-3 moving to Ruesselsheim, Germany, home and headquarters of GM's Opel division. Albeit polarizing to Saab purists, the move was aimed to consolidate GM's European manufacturing as much as possible.
Presently, the Trollhattan factory builds only the 9-3 and its re-skinned variant, the Euro-exclusive Cadillac BTS.
As consolation for not building the 9-3, the Russelshiem factory - presently responsible for both the Vectra and Signum - will receive a third shift and a new product. Although GM won't comment, the shift may be to add production of the Astra, given that car's new market here in the U.S.
