Who could automakers hire to obtain insider Porsche secrets?

Obviously, James Bond is still available.

According to Reuters and Spiegel magazine reports, Frankfurt police are investigating a possible eavesdropping case in the hotel room of Porsche's CEO when he recently visited Volkswagen's Wolfsburg headquarters. Reports say a security firm found a switched-on baby phone behind a sofa in the room where Wendelin Wiedeking was to stay for a Volkswagen supervisory board meeting.

Spiegel magazine would not divulge how it obtained the information, but a Porsche spokesman, contacted by Reuters, confirmed that "something" had been found. A VW spokesman said that investigations have started as a baby phone - a device which alerts parents if their child starts crying - was found.

State prosecutors in the nearby city of Braunschweig will take over the Porsche case. However, no state prosecutors were immediately available for comment.

Porsche also confirmed a report in Focus magazine that it had complained to the police that the phone of workers council chief Uwe Hueck had been tapped.

At Automobile Magazine, we love hearing stories of car espionage. But hopefully future spies do our industry proud by investing in adult eavesdropping gear.
