EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK: 2008 Saturn Vue Green Line, Day 3

Read Rusty Blackwell's comments on driving the 2008 Saturn Vue Green Line.

Unlike Amy and my wife, I'm not a big fan of this color, but the Vue is decent-looking inside and out. As Sam and Amy point out, though, the interior quality is lacking, and the steering is overly light. The mild hybrid system works pretty transparently, but 25/32 mpg (EPA) is a big improvement over the comparable nonhybrid Vue, which is rated at 19/26 mpg. That improvement initially seems worth the Green Line's $4000 premium ($26K base), but it sure would be nice to have more oomph at your command. Merging onto the highway can be scary; I thought that the Vue had a CVT when I floored it and nothing happened for a few seconds. Heck, I almost got rear-ended before the four-speed automatic finally decided what it needed to do. I really like smallish SUVs/crossovers, but I'd cross-shop the Vue against the Escape/Mariner, the CR-V, and other vehicles before signing on Saturn's dotted line.
