Fiat BTM?? Fiat Dino?? What exactly was Jerry Seinfeld driving last Saturday when he was involved in an accident? Newswires and bloggers across the planet--including the once-esteemed New York Times---got it wrong. Newsday got it right. Seinfeld's new toy is a 1967 Fiat 500, a vintage car owned by many discerning collectors. Yes, I have one.

More facts: brakes failed. He didn't roll it, but says it just "sort of fell over on its side," Arte Johnson style.

As much as we try to keep the celebrity coverage down to a dull roar, this wild reporting (some of it accompanied by photos of Mr. Seinfeld purloined without permission or attribution from our own Automobile Magazine, driving a Porsche Carrera GT he wrote about for us) compels us to express our dismay at this major gaffe by the NY Times. Don't they just call and check the facts?

But it gives us a little promotional opportunity here. Pick up the June issue of Automobile Magazine (on sale the first week of May) and read Seinfeld's story about his little Fiat, written pre-incident. It's a corker.

We will NOT be bringing you any other updates on Mr. Seinfeld's daily whereabouts, his garage in Manhattan, what he had for breakfast, the IQs of his children, and so on.

Because we're NOT that kind of magazine.

Thank you,
Jean Jennings
