Electric superchargers could become a common sight in a  few years.

Controlled Power Technologies is prepared to bring an electric supercharger to market in the next 18 months, according to a press release issued this week. The electric superchargers are supposed to be affordable and will work on all gas and diesel engines, including engines already equipped with a turbocharger.

Adding an electric supercharger will allegedly take 40 percent off the time required to sprint from 45 to 65 mph in top gear. The supercharger is able to deliver a nearly instant burst of air to the engine. Such a supercharger is said to be plug and play as it is not driven by a belt, like a traditional supercharger. Several automakers are reportedly interested in using the electric supercharger, but none have been named yet.
