Go Green, Pay Less Tolls

Buying a hybrid car can help save money at the pump and on tax returns, but now hybrids are also beneficial for those who use toll roads.

Following discount toll trends in cities such as London and Stockholm, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is offering a $2 E-ZPass (Green Pass) toll discount to owners of vehicles that get 45 miles per gallon on the highway and meet low emission standards. Similarly, to enter the Limited Traffic Zone in Milan, Italy, drivers pay a toll based on vehicle emissions in five engine classes. Vehicles with methane, electricity and hybrid engines, as well as ambulances and many motorcycles, are exempt.

While no hybrid in America is completely exempt from tolls, lets hope our larger cities follow Europe's lead!
